MLK Day- A Day On, Not A Day Off

Martin Luther King, Jr. was a civil rights activist, among many other things, that made change happen where ever he went. What more could a person ask for than to have a day dedicated to them? But more importantly, a day of service.

In Bloomington, the buzz about "A day on, not a day off" was impressive. The rooftop garden received a $700 grant for the occasion towards improving the garden and holding a volunteer event for the community.

We had a great turn out and started constructing a low tunnel that will allow for season extension by providing the ideal environment for plant growth earlier in the Spring and later into Winter. Volunteers enjoyed painting old tires with vibrant colors that will be used as planters and will bring an artistic element to an already beautiful garden. This is an example of keeping items out of the landfill while giving them a new purpose. Additionally, seeds were planted in small containers that will go under a lamp until they are ready to be transplanted in the Spring.

To some, MLK Dayis an extended weekend but to others, it's a day of giving back. Thank you to all of the volunteers and rock star interns for making this event possible.
